Renal Cell Carcinoma

Renal cell carcinoma is a cancer that grows a kidney mass in the lining of the filtering tubes of the kidney. Kidney cancer is diagnosed in over 50,000 people a year in the USA. Thirteen thousand people die from kidney cancer a year in the US. Many urinary symptoms can be indicators of renal cell carcinoma such as microscopic hematuria, urinary retention, kidney pain, and bladder symptoms such as gross hematuria, frequent urination, and cloudy urine. There are two kidneys that reside on each flank side, towards the middle of the back, to left and right of the spine. They are about 4 to 6 inches long with arteries that flow through the kidneys, through thin tubes that filter out water, urea, and other wastes from your blood, creating urine. The urine then travels down a ureter, one for each kidney, and it empties into the bladder. When the bladder fills up with urine (about a cup and a half to two cups) the stretched bladder sends a signal to the brain that it is full. The brain then sends signals to the bladder to squeeze the bladder and open up the urethra to urinate. A kidney mass can obstruct the filtering system so whether the kidney tumor is benign or cancerous it needs to be diagnosed.

Renal cell carcinoma is diagnosed by urology specialists who also treat the renal cell carcinoma with kidney surgery to remove the kidney mass. Da Vinci surgery is often the preferred method for the nephrectomy (kidney removal) or partial nephrectomy. Another kidney surgery used for renal cell carcinoma is cryosurgery (freezing the kidney mass) when the kidney tumor is limited in size and in the proper location. Kidney surgery was originally performed by urology surgeons with an open surgery. In time urologic surgery advanced with the advent of laparoscopic surgery because less surgical area was exposed, which made for less scaring, less blood loss, and faster healing times. The partial nephrectomy (removal of the kidney tumor) or cryosurgery of the kidney mass, allows the patient to continue to use the kidney.

Clinical research trials and natural medicine holistic procedures are applied to the needs of our clients as needed. Both modern and traditional medicines enjoy benefits for specific urological prevention, diagnostic, treatment, and recovery parameters. Dr. Fernando Bianco and Dr. Edward Gheiler who perform urologic surgery for the comprehensive Urology Specialists center will apply the best methods to remedy your kidney symptoms whether they are for kidney cancer or kidney stones treatment.

Renal cell carcinoma has been diagnosed and treated at the Urology Specialists medical facility since its inception over a decade ago. Before we go into the prevention, symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, and recovery of renal cell carcinoma, here is a look at the urological services we perform:
